The Blind Men and the Elephant

The poem the Blind Men and the Elephant was based on an Indian Tale about six blind men who were curious about an elephant.

In the poem the blind men were curious about what an elephant looks like. They each took turns touching the elephant and got a sense of the appearance of elephant even though they could not observe it. They all believed they got the right answer based on their touch. 

In the end, they argued each other and insisted their own view of the elephant was correct. No body could persuade the others. Each of the blind men were partly right about the elephant, but they were wrong as a whole.

This story is telling us that we, as an individual, may look at things from a limited point of view and may be unable to get an appropriate understanding of the reality. We should try to listen to, understand, and adopt other points of view. In this way, we will be able to get a proper perspective and obtain a whole picture in a variety of situations and events.

Road Being Taken

The author of the Road Not Taken was happy with his choice. He realized that his choice to take the less travelled road changed his life. Indeed, life is full of choices, some are small and some are big. The smaller choice might be trivial such as what we will have for our supper; the bigger choice could be what kind of house will be right for us. The bigger choices could be a turning point of your life and are more important than the smaller one. It is not easy to make a right choice each time. It requires a considerable amount of thought, a great deal of courage, and even needs a tremendous amount of hard work. As stated by our teacher, we need to learn to take the road less travelled, be an individual, and appreciate the road we have chosen and look for the hidden treasure that are there - focusing on the road being taken rather than the road not taken.

Learn from the First English Poem

Study the poem of UPHILL by English poet Christina Rossetti (1830-1894):

The poet used "uphill" to imply the life's journey. The journey of life is not easy, we have to work hard during our journey. Everyone eventually approaches the end of life. Once the life is over we will continue our journey in another life. We can meet the people who finished their life earlier than us. When our death approaches we do not need to have any worries and do not need to ask any permissions, we shall find "comfort, travel-sore and weak". During the resting we start to open another chapter of second chance of life.

I hope this is true. In this way we can meet the persons who left us earlier and we really miss during our life journey.
